Drosophila species wings: so similar, but still distinctive

Kim van der Linde .

Presentation given at the 16 th annual meeting of the Netherlands Entomological Society, Groningen, the Netherlands.

Abstract
Drosophila wings are surprisingly similar across species. All except one large Hawaiian species poses the same number of veins, at approximately the same locations. Despite this similarity, differences between species are apparent. In this talk, the question I will be addressing is how similar are the wings across species, and whether they are still distinctive enough to distinguish the different species. To do so, I will use a geo-morphometric approach in which we determine the exact location of various landmarks. These landmarks are either ends of veins or junctions between veins. Finally, I will discuss the potential of this technique in the taxonomic field.
